FOOT WAVE LONDON, GARAGE - 23.09.04 |
|||||||||||||||
Reverence was thick in the air when Kristin walked on stage with her new band, Fifty Foot Wave. She is of course THE most underrated singer/songwriter of the past 20 years and with her band she takes her sound one step further than she did with the Throwing Muses. After a ropey start due to bad sound and rusty vocals, it warms up to be a loud and intense night. You can’t believe the noise that comes from her as she calmly stands on the stage effortlessly playing her guitar. Her voice is rougher and rawer than on anything she has done with the Throwing Muses or solo. This is back to basic music but underneath the layers there is always a melody lurking. The songs played were from their mini album, songs like Bug and Dog Days sound fantastic, they also played new songs from another mini album that is due out early next year. Again they are in the same vein as Bug, these songs will take a few listens to really appreciate. On one song Kristin screamed the whole way through, this was a bit too heavy even for me. Their music has all the attitude that most bands these days can only dream of, whilst seemingly doing it without any effort. Brilliant but not for everyone. Review by Sonia Pagliari |
