He reminded me a little bit of Skellig - not in his mannerisms, but more because of the impact he has. You feel those difficult scenes so clearly with her that I'm sure that anyone reading them would really build up their empathy for anyone else that they met or saw who was going through a similar thing or would identify with it if they had gone through it themselves. As she struggles through school life, making friends, fitting in and being accepted in a new country, these ‘wonders’ may just give her the power she needs to ‘find her way ‘home’.

Polly Ho-Yen's own experience of teaching in an inner-London Primary School and caring about the children that she taught and the lives that they live really shines through in this book which is what makes it so special. It can be a little infuriating but equally it definitely adds a little something, something to the book. Read more about the condition Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition.

Feeling lost and alone in a strange new city, Leelu wishes she could fly away back home her real home where her dad is, thousands of miles away. Every single character in this book, good or bad or in between, is superbly written and I loved Leelu and her brother Tiber, who also faces some issues when arriving in England, especially. Richardet who lost his life in a motorcycle accident in September 2018 near Camp LeJeune, NC, at the age of 19. Looking around me, I could see that living in a city could be incredibly isolating for many people at certain periods of their life although I think this could be said for anywhere, where different issues would crop up. We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as it is a beautiful book which introduces the power of symbols to the children.

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. I find Polly's writing very easy to read and that is why I will go out of my way to read her other work. Maybe that's me looking at it's from too much of an adult perspective but I would not want my child thinking it's okay to go off with random adults! Contemporary But with an air of magic or mystery that softened Leelus experiences for the younger reader. She’s still writing stories and though she doesn’t teach now, she still visit schools … only now they’re all over the country.

In my opinion Leelu's struggles with being in a new country and missing her dad was the best part of this book. The book is a real mix of the magical realism element and real, contemporary issues, and also touches on immigration and the meaning of home. It reminded me of being a child again, sometimes glimpsing part of an adult world that I couldn’t put together, but mostly being lost in my own struggles and joys. Polly's books have been great for stretching the boundaries of what she's prepared to read without overwhelming her with the grittiness of life.

I would give this book five stars and I would recommend it to anybody who loves action and sometimes a little bit of humour. When the hard realities underlying the family's plight needed to be explained it was done gently but clearly.

Living in a dilapidated flat in a forgotten part of the city and feeling like an outsider at school, Leelu wishes she could fly the thousands of miles back home to where her dad has had to stay behind. However, the girl she befriends from next door is like a ray of sunshine into the rest of the dark and sinister book.
