| >ABERFELDY LONDON, SCALA - 20.10.04 |
|||||||||||||||
This is my second time in the Scala this week and my second time in the Scala ever. I like the venue, it’s smaller that I thought and when I walk in tonight it is nearly empty even though Aberfeldy are due on in 10 minutes. This kind of gives it the feel of a school hall, the people that are there are too scared to go right the front so everyone is huddled at the back. Aberfeldy consist of 3 males and 2 females. When they come on the feeling of being back at school gets even stronger. They look so young and remind me of watching a sixth form band performing at the end of term concert. Don’t get me wrong, I am enjoying this. The audience that have finally gathered are just as young, cool and kooky like Aberfeldy, and they sit on the floor waiting to be entertained. The singer’s voice is distinguished and sounds just as good live as on record, their songs also translate really well live but at some points the audience were louder than the band, which was a shame. The two girls are probably every male students dream, floaty dresses and flowers in their hair, they seem to be having fun on stage with each other. Most of their songs that they play are from their debut album “Young Forever” and listening to and watching them can only put you in a good mood! It is perfect folk induced pop music with songs about vegetarian restaurants and the evils of drinking sung with a perfect high pitched voice and glorious backing vocals you can’t help but fall in love with every song. Riley, the main singer does his best to charm the audience and most do take notice of him. They finish off with their single “Heliopolis by Night” and when the girls sing they hold their noses to give the required effect for their voices. It’s all very twee and nice and by the end of the set they seem to have won most people over with their xylophone laden pop songs. Review by Sonia Pagliari |
