anti-Simon Cowell rants and outbursts of rock 'n' roll evangelism there's enough musical muscle to back up the big talk. 'Modern Art', 'Popular Culture' & 'We Formed a Band' positively bristle with ideas in amongst the spiky riffs. The performance isn't quite up with last week's gig at The Buffalo Bar, perhaps because the crowd are a little more timid tonight, but Art Brut get us off to a thunderous start. MY RED CELL have been picking up their fair share of plaudits recently, signing to V2 records, and being featured in NME's 'Brit Pack', and on |

tonight's showing it's easy to see why. The two front men create pitch

character provided by Art Brut's jagged edges, My Red Cell's sound has a slick sheen that positively screams MTV2 playlist, while in Russel Toomey they've got a frontman to rival Pelle Almqvist in the showmanship stakes (although I must admit I did laugh when he swang his guitar over his shoulder only for his guitar strap to come off halfway through). Big things are also expected of CORPORATION:BLEND, who's garage tinged metal will undoubtedly draw comparisons with the similarly gonzoid Datsuns. Can't say that this sort of thing's my cup of tea really, but the crowd seem to be going for it, packing the front of the stage in real numbers for the first time tonight. I guess it's easy rock thrills, and |

at a time when The Darkness rule rock's roost, that's a valuable commodity. |

I've no doubt that those with an eye on the charts will soon be well acquainted with both My Red Cell and Corporation:Blend, but for those who like their bands to serve up something a little different, I'd take Art Brut every time.
