BOYFRIENDS LONDON, METRO - 15.07.04 |
|||||||||||||||
Having been on Angular Recordings latest compilation and their song getting rave reviews left, right and centre things seem to be moving forward very fast for The Boyfriends. The Metro gig is the bands biggest so far and they use the opportunity to ensure that everyone leaves a convert to their luscious indie-pop. The venue is packed by the time The Boyfriends take to the stage and from the amount of people who were watching the support it is clear that not everyone was here to see them. However rather than worrying about this they, almost visibly, swell to fill the stage and ensure that they have everyone’s undivided attention. It is a ploy that works well and the end of the first song is met with rapturous applause, this is the pattern for the rest of the evening. Musically the set is stunning, the mix is good and the vocals can be heard well, even at the front of the venue, the guitar sounds clean and fresh and it is clear from the vibes coming from the stage that the band are having are having as good a time as the audience. This gig also sees the band taking the things that influenced them and making them their own, poses and sounds that in the past seemed to come directly from The Smiths melt into a sound that is now unique to The Boyfriends. The style of music changes rapidly, from brooding to summery pop, all sung by Martin Wallace; a front man who, complete with trademark dark stare and mandatory white jacket, brings a sense of fun to the proceedings. Despite being the obvious focus Martin lets the other members steal the end of the show by leaving the stage midway through the last song of the set. It is a refreshing alternative to introducing the band, all of whom take part in the wonderful inter-song banter. Their lack of encore does not show arrogance, but more is a lovely gimmick, ensuring they leave the crowd wanting more. At one point it is suggested if we like the gig we should tell our friends to go and see them. I’m taking them up on that suggestion as when they get where they’re going it’s going to be a fight to get to the front. Review by Foxy Catch The Boyfriends at Joyfest
