SUPPORTING TOM VEK

SOUTHAMPTON, JOINERS: 06.05.05

It must be said that I am a total Clor Virgin. But in true journalistic style I did do
my homework before the gig, so felt (semi) prepared for what I was going to
find. Two things strike me about Clor. Firstly, their artwork on the website and
the singles, and secondly their style. Now I’m not going to go all fashionista on
you – don’t worry. But how cool: a band that incorporates video (made by the
lead singer's girl friend), neon tubes, crazy cool hair and funked up attitudes to
match. That’s what I like.

So, back to the gig. Chatting to the manager before, it seems that Clor are
going to be big - huge in fact. But maybe not quite yet. This band is doing its
groundwork first before world domination, which is fine for all us lucky musos
who get to see them in suitably grubby venues like the Joiners. Clor took the
stage for around 45 mins, blasting through current tracks (single Love + Pain)
and other faves like ‘Making You all Mine’. Clor sound in fine form: nasal,
beaten, working hard and most definitely rocking, but, wait for it, they look
bored. And silly though this sounds, I felt a little offended that they didn’t seem

to be enjoying themselves! Why, might you ask? Well, it could have been something to do with the temperature –the Joiners was sweatier than an old lady’s armpit, with the smell to match. Or maybe they weren’t quite getting the reaction that they wanted from the crowd, but lets say that at least three of the most prominent members of the band looked a little frustrated.

Problems aside, the set was perfect. The neon tubes and projections flavoured the set with electronica,

musically highlighted in their new single, and its awesome b-sides. The film was intriguing: the dance to ‘Love + Pain’ got the crowd going. Clor definitely have their own vibe going on, which stunk of originality and the balls and authenticity of a bloody good band. I had a quick chat with Luke and Max, and the band agreed to do a wee interview for me (via the power of the net). So here goes:

1. Hello Clor…So tell me about your new album. Is it better or worse?
- better

2. Your new single is all about lurve… why? Are any of you currently in love?
- All you need is love.

3. Who does your artwork? I think it looks like a bit dark. Why is that?
- Barry does the artwork and he is a little dark.

4. What are your names, I am a Clor virgin.
- Barry – Vox, gits. Luke – gits. Bob – Keys. Harry – drums, Max - Bass

5. What music do you listen to when you have sex?

- The relentless pounding rhythms of Boy George.

6. Love, or Pain?
- Two sides of the same coin.

7. Do you like Tom Vek? Who is the worst person you have EVER toured with (be honest please.)
- What we like best about Tom Vek is his humanity, but of course his band are human too. We’ve luckily never had a tour with nasty people.

8. Tell me about your instruments – is playing much like caressing a good woman?
– As a good woman being caressed, do you ever feel like you’re being played like a guitar?

9. I walk into a club and ‘Love and Pain’ is playing. How should I dance?

- follow your urges, express yourself.

10. Finally, tell me something I don’t know.
- “The dawn of life – or something very like it – sits on a shelf in the office of a friendly isotope geochemist named Victoria Bennett in the Earth Sciences building of the Australian National University in Canberra.”

Thank you Clor, and goodnight! Miss B x x

So there you have it, maybe a small insight into the crazy world of Clor, maybe just some silly answers to some silly questions…

Next up, Messer Vek and band, and my God, they’ve grown up The Stage was totally Black apart from ‘WE HAVE SOUND ‘ in neon glaring out over the crowd. And they had the sound. Rarely does an album grab me quite as much as Tom’s, and the live players are now tighter than the tightest pair of tights available to womankind. ‘Green Lights’ blew me into a dancing frenzy – I love the bass on this song, ‘If you want’ exploded out from the stage with more power and verve than I have ever heard. Tom is here to stay.

SO generally a goodly night had by all… and having Danny and James, the live players partying in my flat with whisky and smokes till five in the morn, made it bloody excellent…
