It was Jose who, whilst under the spell of the moon went ‘Aluado’, dreaming up the idea of creating a wine entirely from this unique grape. Aluado immerses the senses with a flavour intensity and midnight complexion that compels the mind to drift and dream. Thanks to a great season, Aluado 2015 is a big, rich wine best served with roast meats - try with pork or rack of lamb.

When Jose Neiva Correira first decided to make a red from pure Alicante Bouschet, a grape usually only used as part of a blend, everyone thought he was mad 'aluado'. Of course by the time I drank the Aluado 2018 Alicante Bouchet "Reserva" it was no longer available much to my great dismay.Every vintage page from the most recent to the oldest has detailed charts showing production by region and the most popular, best, most expensive and cheapest wines of the vintage currently listed. Rarely used on its own, Alicante Bouschet from the cooler Lisboa region can obviously produce an impressively structured wine. It is here that the great winemaker, José Neiva Correia, created the idea of Aluado in a moonstruck moment. Following on from last year's triple Gold medal triumph, José again used grapes from his own historic estate, Quinta de Porto Franco, which dates back to the 12th century and is thought to be the oldest vineyard in Alenquer. Whilst sceptics initially laughed at the idea, it was Jose and his Aluado that triumphed, as these excellent, original wines attest. The Alicante Bouschet grapes grow at José’s Quinta do Porto Franco estate, 40 miles north of Lisbon. Cool climate Alicante Bouschet from the Lisboa region has a strongly perfumed character as well as intense fruitiness. A useful resource for hunting down that rare bottle or a birthday-year wine for a loved one’s special day. Pure Alicante Bouschet is rare in the cooler Lisboa region, but this wine certainly reveals much of the richness and intense fruit that makes this grape so popular among producers.
