KINGS CROSS , SCALA - 01.12.04
Mclusky   Hey, so I got the date wrong and it was the day McLusky was supporting, not the Minutemen, but hey, am I sad? No way, dude. Cos McLusky R O C K. They shamble on, switch on, and blow my ears out. They were excellent. I don't know any of their songs, I recognised the last one they did but what it's called I don;t know. But that matters not. They were excellent. They look good and I would go as far as disagreeing with Steve Albini's comments about their terrible dress sense - anoraks on stage are a good idea. I would agree with him though that they are one of the best live bands in the world. Do the lyrics to the second song really go 'everywhere I go is a crack house'? I hope they do (sorry to shatter your illusions Rash, but it's 'everywhere I look is a darkness' - ed). It is not only true of where I live but poignant social commentary. Listen up, Mr

Blair. This is the new UK. My only criticism would be that the cigarette smoking routine would wear thin after the

second time I'd seen it. But I now have to buy all McLusky. Damn.

Shellac are on next, I like how they set up their own gear, no pretenses. They have their ace home made amps with them (see guitargeek dot com for the secrets inside the box). Steve looks like Steve, bass man looks a bit porky, the drummer looks like death. But they are the mighty Shellac. They play some stuff I can remember - 'My Black Ass', 'Prayer to God', a bit of 'Doris', 'Wingwalker' (hoorah!!), other stuff I recognised but can't now remember and some new stuff I didn't recognise but the one about the death of radio...' is this thing on??' is awesome and the John Peel reference in the lyric - 'John Peel was a hell of a man' gets the biggest cheer of the night. The Q&A session was good but I'm not

Shellac

going to quote all that now - go to electrical dot com and find out about all that.

My only criticism is the moron fans who heckle Steve all the time and snigger during some of the more 'poetic'

moments. But we can ignore them. Shellac rule. Best gig overall this year.
