SOUTH THE BOYFRIENDS, THE LONG BLONDES + GIFTHORSE BRIXTON, WINDMILL - 04.06.04 |

Into the final stretch, and Angular's coming home. Not to New Cross admittedly, but The Windmill's become a second abode to ARC and co. Sadly, tonight's headliners The Rakes had to pull out due to recording commitments, so into the breach step "Angular FC supersubs" Gifthorse, but sadly their performance is less Ole Gunnar Solskjaer than Kevin Braniff, and their indie jangle, whilst pleasant enough leaves little lasting impression. An early Morrissey cover "From when he used to be good" show promising signs, but their own material doesn't quite match up. |

| This is the one I've been waiting for all week - Sheffield's Long Blondes provided one of the highlights of 'Rip Off Your Labels', and I'd heard great things from everybody that has seen them live. They certainly make for an | |||||||||||||||||||
arresting visual spectacle as they take to the stage - The drummer looks like a less porky Jack Osbourne, and is joined by a foppish guitarist, two girls, one on bass, one on guitar who look like they were kicked out of the auditions for Grease for kicking Olivia Newton-John's ass and a singer in red nylon country and western garb, who proceeds to slink through a set of supremely spiky punkarama. Ok, so none of them are blonde, and the songs are anything but long, but they offer up a heady mix of Sleater Kinney esque gritty punk, of the kind displayed so masterfully by The Violets the day before; 'Leader of the Pack' style ramalama girl group glam punk and jerkily danceable punk funk fun that gets an increasingly |

| and by the time tonight's elevated headliners The Boyfriends stride purposefully on to the Windmill's colourful stage it's getting on for 11.30. Still, in the short time they have before I am forced to make a mad dash through the streets of Brixton to catch the last train home, they unfold a sophisticated and enthralling indie guitar sound, that draws on similar influences to last night's top billers Luxembourg (The Smiths, Pulp, early nineties indie in general), but comes out at somewhere completely different. Their offering for 'Rip Off Your Labels', the elegant, soaring 'No Tomorrow' steals the show tonight; it's velvety vocals and skyscraping guitars floating across my brain like an aural massage. But no matter how great they sound tonight, the thought of sleeping rough in Brixton and having my car towed is too much, and I leave the Windmill as their polished tones still hang in the air, | ![]() |

beckoning me back through the doors like a South London siren. It's a sad way to end a wonderful three days, but there's always the launch party next weekend to look forward to. |
