Description

Abandoned Ireland begins its story at Cairndhu, a mansion on the dramatic Antrim coast road north of Larne. This is a truly heart-warming story of loss, recovery and above all, of community' Bernie McGill, author of The Watch House. During this time I uncovered that the house had begun as a country mansion and was used as a summer residence and had belonged to Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon from Belfast. Bawnboy Workhouse was completed in 1851-2 and was designed by the George Wilkinson, who was the Poor Law Commissioners’ architect. These plans had been delayed and he was happy for us to carry out investigations and let us come and go as we pleased.

The images are captivating … she has a natural eye for composition, and a talent for picking out features of interest, whether that’s highlighting the breathtaking architectural aspects of a building, or honing in on the sights that tell the stories of the forgotten lives within. Gill Hall was destroyed in the 1970s and, not long after Brownlie captured that image of the spectre in the old convent, it too was demolished. From Big Houses to humble cottages, schools to prisons, churches to dance halls, these buildings may now be abandoned, but they are far from empty. I travelled to an iron ore mine deep in the Sahara Desert on one of the world's most extreme railways. In the seemingly ruined and mundane she finds diamonds in the rough; her images of the ordinary ephemera of past lives – dusty love letters, rusting spectacles, photographs yellowed and curled with age – paint the pictures of real people and full lives. Locals say that James was conjuring demons, which attracted a poltergeist to the house, causing the family’s nightmare. The workhouses and prisons in Ireland at that time were suffering from overcrowding, which forced them to offload some of their more troublesome inmates to asylums, which meant that many of the patients did not actually need psychiatric care and were there for living purposes only, but it was against the law to refuse entry to anyone. The author is interested above all, one senses, in the grain of day-to-day life: in the stories and power retained by detritus and everyday objects – the crucifix on the wall, the dusty piano, assorted books, the bottle of cod liver oil – even amid the desolation of abandonment. I had been through most of the building and had just come out of the canteen, which had a glass door, intending to head up to the last remaining floor.

Many of these hospitals treated the rare and infectious diseases of their times, particularly tuberculosis (TB). In Abandoned Ireland, discover Athassel Abbey on the banks of the River Suir and the largest medieval priory in Ireland; marvel at the imposing Carrigogunnel Castle, destroyed during the second siege of Limerick in 1691; explore Carrigglas Manor, a turreted fairytale exterior with a bloody history; see Hilden Mill, a former factory with ghostly sightings; explore the creepy, overgrown ruin of Ennis District Lunatic Asylum in County Clare; and wander the ruins of Rinn Dúin (“fortified headland”) overlooking the River Shannon, a key military and trading town fought over by Norman barons and Irish chieftains. Our small-group adventures are inspired by our Atlas of the world's most fascinating places, the stories behind them, and the people who bring them to life. As I venture upstairs, I’m taken aback to see old tea sacks filled with straw lying on the raised platforms.

Abandoned Ireland by Dominic Connolly, published by Amber Books , shows the extraordinary past of the small island country, exploring everywhere 'from the sparsely inhabited west coast to the urban buzz of Dublin and Belfast '. When I got home and started editing, I noticed something in the glass door that I hadn’t noticed at the time. Today, remnants of the country’s heritage can be found in every corner of this fascinating land, from the thinly inhabited west coast to the modern, populated areas of Leinster. The entire building was locked up and had a team of security who let me and one other person in to take photographs, so I know we were the only people in the building at the time.I stumbled across many tumble-down houses which on the outside look nothing more than run-down cattle shed.
