About this deal

Critical Thinking: By programming different combinations to send Code-a-pillar Twist™ down various paths, preschoolers can try and try again, exercising those critical thinking skills!

g., the "straight" command points up, but going straight can sometimes mean moving to the right, left, or down). Find more complex apps, look online together, or go to the library to find books about computer programming. If children don't develop these skills as they grow up then physical making projects can become frustrating rather than fun. Also, if Code-a-Pillar seems too loud, solder a 50Ω resistor (or similar) in series with the speaker. By programming different combinations to send Code-a-pillar Twist down various paths, preschoolers can try and try again, exercising those critical thinking skills! Kids can learn about some underlying concepts that support coding as they use a set of commands, problem-solve, and evaluate to figure out which to use to reach a goal.

This is app has the same adorable Code-a-Pillar character; however, the app is separate from the physical Code-a-Pillar robot.

As the child adds a segment onto the Code-a-pillar the button on the back lights up so you know that you have attached it properly. Right off the bat your little ones will be able to not only decide what they want their Code-a-pillar to do but they’ll see the immediate “cause and effect” of their choices.

Planning and Sequencing: After twisting the segments a few times, kids will discover that if they plan a path and twist the dials to create the right sequence, they can get Code-a-pillar Twist™ to follow their plan! As you pull the segments off and rearrange them the caterpillar will adjust it’s direction to meet the new codes. Here’s a photo from the top looking down so you can get a better view of the coding commands on each section. In fact this Code-a-pillar is SO simple to use in fact that my daughter, who is 19 months old, can use it! My background includes an MFA in theater which I apply to thinking about immersive experiences of the future. The toy moves based on how you plug in its modular segments, a step on the road towards understanding the concept of code. Using straight, left and right segments, students arrange Code-a-Pillar’s segments and watch the caterpillar move accordingly! Former teacher of computer skills grades K-8 I'm not sure how much it has to do with "coding" per se, but my son loves to rearrange the pieces to go straight, left and right.
