Drake, my little sweat gland, are we expecting visitors?” Countess Frivoleeta said. “Wooo!” she called without waiting for her husband’s reply. “Please answer that immediately.” In book two, Amelia Fang and the Unicorn Lords, Amelia and her friends must brave the journey to the terrifying Kingdom of the Light to try to find Tangine’s missing mother, Queen Fairyweather. But with unicorns and angel-kittens lurking around every corner, who can they trust? And will they finally uncover the real villain keeping the kingdoms of Light and Dark as mortal enemies?

But that's not all! The bravest little vampire in the kingdom embarks on a BRAND NEW ADVENTURE discovering new worlds and new characters in the FOURTH book of the series... But even if Amelia and her friends do find Vincent, will they be able to find their way home? Or will they be trapped in the toad afterlife FOREVER? But not long after arriving, the precious glittery treasures of the ancient yetis start to go missing. And when Tangine goes missing too he becomes the prime suspect! Not only that but the tunnels of Yeti Mountain have started to collapse on themselves and it looks like Florence and her family will have to move far away. It's looking like the gang might never see each other again! Contrary to popular belief, vampires don’t actually live on a diet of blood. It gives them very stinky breath!)

First problem emerged when we were introduced to Amelia's parents. Parental figures were ridiculed, undermined as authority and most importantly refused to help Amelia when she was in a state of need. Her mother puts the need to please the King before her own daughter on several occasions - for example she lets prince Tangine take Amelia's pet and when she protests and stands up for herself, she tells her "not to be hysterical and not to cause a scene". Drake, my darkness, you do know it’s our annual Barbaric Ball in just three nights?” Countess Frivoleeta cooed. “We still have invitations to send, catering to sort out and— oh, did you book the Howling Wolf Band?” Welcome to the world of Nocturnia, where darkness reigns supreme, glitter is terrifying, and unicorns are the stuff of nightmares! Amelia Fang would much rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON’T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents’ annual Barbaric Ball.

Amelia Fang is a feisty ten-year-old vampire, who loves spending time with her two best friends, Grimaldi the reaper and Florence, a rare breed of yeti. They live in Nocturnia, a land of darkness, ghosts and ghouls, where the sparkly magic of fairies and unicorns fills them with terror. Also, believe it or not, there was also a twist to the plot that I WASN'T expecting in there, and that just brought the story up a whole nother level! Join author and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson for a fantastic reading from her newest book, Amelia Fang and the Memory Thief! Amelia sets off determined to retrieve Squashy away from the awful prince but can she and will she succeeded and what is wrong with the prince to make him so awful?Set in Nocturnia, Amelia and the rest of the Fang family are preparing to host the latest Barbaric ball the only annual event in Nocturnal only this time, the king and prince are attending too. Until she is asked to look after three very mischievous caticorns who make it their business to get Amelia in a world of trouble. And now we get to the bullying part. Tangine could have been a very interesting character - he's a spoiled member of the royal family and a future king. In his opinion, his social status gives him the right to torment everyone around him, his main target being Amelia. By the end of the book it's revealed that Tangine's mother has disappeared not long after he was born and he's father has spent all of his waking moment's looking for her therefore neglecting Tangine and leaving him in the care of his Mummy Maids. Which is a very real and common situation with today's bullies. I see what the author tried to do but unfortunately it was once again executed, in my opinion,in a wrong way. Tangine realises that what he does is wrong and hurtful to others only after he is himself humiliated by Amelia. This could have been done very differently - Amelia could have asked Tangine to return her beloved pet instead of breaking into his house. The thing is that there wasn't even an attempt to talk thing out - it's quite important to show children that thing can be resolved by speaking up. So much potential wasted. Ahead of time Amelia has to show the prince around her school where he acts very stuffily towards them all and when he has dinner with the whole family pre barbaric ball, he acts entitled and ends up taking Amelia's Squashy, her friend! The book was wonderful, I hated the prince as you should and loved Amelia and her spooky friend. May I say the language and phrases in the book were genius for example a diephone and Great British Carve off for example made me laugh. The drawings were great too with a lot of detail for each character with elaborate costumes for the cast of the book. The deep issue in the book a round friends and parents worked nicely in the last half of the book when Amelia figures things out as the plot develops on and was actually a great twist as well as truthful in how we act to people as we develop relationships.

Countess Frivoleeta is planning the annual Barbaric Ball, THE annual event in Nocturnia. Amelia finds the ball boring – she wants to study Pumpkinology and help poorly pumpkins when she grows up. However, her mother thinks that she needs to learn vampires etiquette. Count Drake had fallen out with King Vladimir, but now he announces he will come to the ball, and will bring his son, Prince Tangine. When the spoilt prices kidnaps Squashy, it is up to Amelia to rescue her beloved pet pumpkin. This was so much fun, and just felt really wholesome. Amelia is a lovely character, warm hearted and caring but not perfect. She's the perfect antedote to typical children's book characters with a love for everything grubby and spooky. Her friends are also really funny too, and I loved how gung-ho Florence is and how Grimaldi is a teeny tiny grim reaper, in charge of toad deaths. It's just so well thought out and described. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading Amelia Fang & The Unicorn Lords and Amelia Fang & The Memory Thief.Set in an unusual world full of eccentric characters, the series follows the funny adventures of a young vampire with a big heart, Amelia Fang, and her diverse gang of friends. Here, there are always wrongs that need righting, mysteries that need solving and creatures who need rescuing – but whatever the adventure, Amelia and her pals always manage to save the day in their own way.

Join Amelia, Florence, Grimaldi, Pumpy and Tangine on the adventure of a lifetime in the fifth book of the series: All this considered I couldn't give Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball a very high rating, which makes me incredibly sad since this book had such potential. Get ready to sink your teeth into the fourth book of the spook-tacular series, Amelia Fang and the Half-Moon Holiday. In Amelia's second adventure, she and her friends Florence the yeti (DON'T CALL HER BEAST), Grimaldi the Death and Prince Tangine (reformed spoiled sprout), along with her pet pumpkin Squashy, must brave the journey to the terrifying Kingdom of the Light to try to find Tangine's missing mother, Queen Fairyweather. Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball was Waterstones Book of the Month in October 2017. Amelia Fang would rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON’T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents’ annual Barbaric Ball. When the King’s spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! But they begin to realise things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem. When Amelia Fang's baby brother, Vincent, accidentally enters a mysterious land – the place where all squished toads go – Amelia has to embark on a daring adventure to rescue him. The illustrations are also done by author Laura Ellen Anderson, and I love the illustrations so much. They are wonderfully Gothic yet light-hearted, perfectly capturing the essence of the story and characters. It’s brilliant to see how this bonkers, infectious world appears in Anderson’s mind because it’s brimming with that much imagination, I needed the visual aid. I have a soft spot for middle grade and children's books so when I saw Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball I was immediately intrigued. A book set in Nocturnia where everything sparkly, fluffy and cute is considered terrifying seemed like a great break from the literature I would normally read. Unfortunately, I had many issues regarding this book and how it executed certain topics. Ed Galton, ceo at Cake and executive producer on Amelia Fang said, “Amelia Fang is full of heart, warmth and big adventure.”
