You know, I saw "Apocalypto" this weekend as well, and, of the two, "Apocalypto" was the feel good movie, and "The Holiday" filled me with rage. One had some integrity; the other was an empty exercise in marketing. Wow! I have put watching this movie off for far too long. What a wonderful film with inspired acting and a crowd pleasing story. I found "The Holiday" to be charming, heartwarming, and touching. Naturally, each sister has a romance that is initially complicated by the existing way the love interests were known to the other sister, but, surprising no one, it all works out happily ever after in the end.

aren't you tired of repeating the same tropes over and over again? Especially in romance novels! For instance when the MC has something to say, a secret to confess - let them freaking confess! Stop interrupting them with idiotic things, just to have the secret come out right before the end in some dramatic way. After that, it always comes to a fight between the love interests or a separation of some sort, only to have it sorted out after a short while, then giving them their HEA. Definitely don't take my rating to heart if this sounds like your thing. This just isn't my cup of tea. I absolutely love this movie. So much stuff to love about it. I serioualy cannot understand why it has such a low rating here on IMDb. Schwarzbaum, Lisa (December 15, 2006). "The Holiday (2006)". Entertainment Weekly. Charlie had been "discovered" by the formidable television producer Sasha Torres-who was now her boss . . . and Austin's. Sasha had come into Souci-the L.A. hot spot where Charlie had made a name for herself as head pastry chef since her return from Paris. Charlie had been tasked with presenting Sasha's table with the flambéed cherries the restaurant was known for. Sasha offered Charlie the "Sweet" hosting side of the reality baking show on the spot. The Holiday Isn't Getting a Sequel, but That Won't Stop Us from Wanting One". Vanity Fair. December 6, 2022 . Retrieved December 6, 2022. One interesting thing to note is Jude Law, whose handsome, empathetic, nurturing, understanding character could best be described as lady porn, plays the sort of role usually played by a woman: the perfect person, wonderful in every way, whose main role in the story is to allow the main character to transition to a new phase in their life. Chang, Justin (November 30, 2006). "The Holiday (2006)". Variety. Archived from the original on December 28, 2013 . Retrieved December 15, 2013. The Holiday' Synopsis: Two women troubled with guy-problems swap homes in each other's countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love.

Despite the sweet writing, likable characters, and fun holiday vibes, I struggled to maintain interest in this book from start to finish. I couldn’t get invested in Charlie or Cass. Nothing negative, just neutral. The food descriptions for the bakery items and the TV show food sounded delicious. But the extensive catalog of dinner foods (and there were several dinner dates) bogged down the relationship scenes. As I left, I felt like I had been treated as a human being. I had not been assaulted by the violence, overt sexual references, gunfire and the explosions that seem to be everywhere. (Not that I don't like a good "shoot the baddies" or "indecent suggestive action" type of movie). The Holiday' is funny & heartwarming. I enjoyed the characters & their journey, as different as it is, made me smile. The goings-on are consistently lighthearted & the result overall, is precious.Premise: We first meet Charlie Goodwin who is a famous pastry chef on a hit reality baking show. While filming a holiday special, she gets hit on the head causing her a severe concussion and the loss of her sense of taste and smell. I'm not going to write how improbable this is, or how it all just kind of neatly fell together for them ... etc. After watching this movie, who really cares? This is romantic fantasy, and light comedy. It touches on honest emotions we all have experienced at one time or another. It was such a fun movie to watch. You are taken away and you want to laugh and cheer, and in parts, cry. This is movie magic. It's why we go to movies - to drop the cares and concerns of our own worlds and lives and enjoy a couple of vicarious hours of entertaining film making. And this is very good film making. You really care for both main characters and want them to find love again. Next, we meet Cameron Diaz, who's having a terrible fight with her boyfriend, Edward Burns. It's a wonderful introduction to her character as well, because even though she appears to be tough and not as sensitive as Kate Winslet, we see subtleties that indicate she has deep feelings in her she's been repressing for a long time. I love this book! It is deliciously fun and wildly romantic, and the dual settings of a baking show set in LA and a family-run bakery in a small snowy town feels like Great British Bakeoff meets Gilmore Girls.… I wanted to befriend the twins, throttle the villains, fall in love with the hero's—and bake up some sourdough.”—Jennifer Robson, author of The Gown

This one was fun! I mean, it’s utterly ridiculous as two adult twins swap places for a week, but hey, if you go with it and suspend your disbelief, it brings the festive feels and oh my god does it make you wanna eat some Christmas treats! Because this book wasn't even halfway bad. Even though it's about twins switching places (which btw has also been done like a gazillion times), I could get over that and actually enjoy it. But sadly, that was only until I figured neither Cat, nor Charlie will be honest about who they are to neither Jake nor Miguel. Literally nothing would have changed, neither of them would have had anything to loose, so I don't get it.

What to know

When Charlie accidentally bumps her head on set, she loses her sense of taste and smell and fears the timing will put her career in jeopardy...so she decides the only solution is to pull The Big Switch. Will the twins make it through the Twelve Days leading up to Christmas with their true identities hidden? And will some chance meetings with the men in each other's lives lead them in directions they never could have dreamed? No co-host to have to share the spotlight with; no grating or witty banter between two people who really couldn't stand one another; more freedom to spread her creative wings; and a lot more money because Bake My Day had an impressive budget. Charlie wanted the job, and she deserved it. She was the better pastry chef, and it was no secret that, of the two of them, she was easier to work with. She had noticed Sasha's eye rolls at Austin's arrogance on more than one occasion. Before I go any further, The Holiday Swap is a clean romance 🧼. Just an FYI for those who go for that & for those who don’t. Tbh, if you look at my shelves, it’s pretty obvious I like my romances steamy (as do most of my GR friends) & I wouldn’t have minded had this had a little bit, but being a Christmas romance 🎄, it wasn’t missed too much either. Idk, I sort of like Christmas-themed ones a little cleaner sometimes than my usual reads anyways. The music helps set the mood in this movie. It is all tamed down and helps to set the feeling of again I must say romance. It makes it so easy to watch and if you can find a guy that will sit down and watch this with you it will create feelings that may lead to something else.

Do you like chocolate? Do you know that moment, even before you put it in your mouth? You can imagine that taste. You can feel that rich sweetness on your tongue, the smoothness going around your mouth . . .The pace of the story works with just the right amount of miscommunications and mishaps when two people switch lives. Reading The Holiday Swap reminded me of that same feeling...I pretty much knew what to expect, and was therefore okay with something reliable, a bit ho-hum, and safe, rather than exciting. One of my favourite parts of the book, both couples were so cute, particularly Cass and Michael. Just like with everything else I wish we got to see more of the development, but what we did get to see was SO CUTE! Cameron Diaz is Amanda, owner of a movie-trailers editing firm. Since she's played the same comedy character several times, there are few surprises; but an excellent script, written directly for her and the other three leading stars, projects it rather better than average. Kate Winslet as Iris, a successful writer on The Telegraph, is more nuanced: an actor with considerable range, we cannot but help admire the way she does 'pathetic girl' rather beautifully in a role that she could manage with one hand counting the ways to have fun and get paid simultaneously. Anyways, I would say for me Charlie’s story arc returning to her hometown(& a small town at that) & realizing the grass isn’t always greener held my interest more between the two sisters tbh. Cass’s story arc is ok, but small town romances are almost always more my jam. Also, the temperament of Cass & her new love were a little too alike imho. I need some contrast.
