About this deal

We do get an extension to the Rec.709/sRGB gamut in the red, yellow and magenta directions, but no extension for greens or cyans. This creates a bit of unbalance for DCI-P3 coverage, we get decent coverage of reds, but poor for greens, and only 91.2% coverage in total. A bit strange, and not very suitable for displaying color accurate wide gamut images. In accordance with the Microsoft Silicon Support Policy, HP does not support or provide drivers for Windows 8 or Windows 7 on products configured with Intel or AMD 7th generation and forward processors For response time performance, HP includes four overdrive settings with the X27q, the first of which is Level 1. This is your classic overdrive disabled setting. Response times are weak, at just 11.5ms when running the monitor at 165Hz, which causes a bit of a blur trail to appear behind moving objects. Of course, as with every manufacturer’s portfolio, there are a few unworthy models here and there, but in this instance, the decent monitors easily compensate for the duds. The first one I can’t suggest from this line is the HP X32c, which I explain why in my review of its non-curved variant. While the image quality is a bit better as opposed to the previous-generation TN models, the 160°/170° viewing angles are still a bit of a problem.

Even if you calibrate, keep in mind that the average color gamut and coverage of this panel will prevent you from achieving professional visual quality. Hp says this monitor has sRGB 99 percent and 16M colors, however, the results pre-calibration wasn’t that standard. Obviously, this is not a monitor for media professionals. HP doesn't include an sRGB mode with this display, and there are only a few other color controls, so overall the only major adjustment you can make is to the white balance. This can improve grayscale performance, but we end up shy of accurate results. As soon as you move and look at the screen from the sides or from below/above, the picture quality degrades. This isn’t a problem if you’re sitting directly in front of the screen, but it’s something you should have in mind.

Features

Overall, the image quality isn’t bad. There’s a notable improvement over the older 1440p 144Hz TN models, such as the Dell S2716DG. We are pretty impressed with how HP has been able to make this sort of monitor with only a bit of fat trimmed around the edges. We lose a bit of wide gamut here, a bit of performance there, we don't get a directional toggle for the OSD, and so on. But the basics are intact, like how we still get a height adjustable stand, and how the gaming experience still holds up well compared to other monitors we've tested with the same specs. As we’ve said in earlier posts, the best screen size for this resolution is a 24-inch minimum; anything larger than that stretches the pixels a little, resulting in blurrier pictures. In general, this display does not have a traditional gaming appearance. The HP X32 surprised us with its gaming features, but casual look. And this one will most likely cause the same.

Besides, even if sunlight hits the screen, which is a bad thing for a lower brightness ratio, this one can manage it effectively and without struggle.Play longer, comfier, and with amazing accuracy on our suite of sweet gaming monitors. We've redefined high definition gaming with IPS Panel Technology, 165Hz, 1ms response time[1], AMD[2] FreeSync™ Premium[3], and more colors than ever before. Game in comfort Ergonomics include height adjustment up to 130mm, tilt by -3°/23°, and 100x100mm VESA mount compatibility via the provided adapter. You cannot swivel or pivot the screen.
